The typeface draws from hand-painted signage, film posters, and vernacular print culture that emerged across African cities in the mid-20th century, where the Latin script was reinterpreted through local making, rhythm, and material conditions.

Blending the clarity and restraint of classic grotesques with subtle vernacular character, Touki Grotesk features open apertures, compact proportions, and carefully shaped terminals that echo hand-crafted lettering without sacrificing modern functionality. It is designed to feel grounded and expressive, while remaining versatile enough for contemporary use across editorial design, branding systems, cultural projects, and public-facing communication.
